Fake Memory Sticks and Flash Cards -How to find out a memory card is fake?

You might be in for a rude shock if you are among those who bought a high capacity bargain USB memory card or SD card from Ebay or Amazon marketplace.
Most Ebay listings for 32GB, 64GB and 128 GB USB sticks offered at a bargain price are fakes and you will regret buying them. In fact I would bet most flash memory on Ebay has reprogrammed faked capacities. Legitimate flash memory costs about £1.50 - £2 per GB. If you buy these fake memory sticks on Ebay or Amazon Marketplace, you will be in for a rude shock when your valuable wedding photos or movies disappear or get corrupted after the memory card has reached its real capacity limit which may be as low as 1 or 2GB. If the price is too good to be true, it will most probably be a fake partially functioning memory stick.
The controller chips of these high capacity flash memory products are manipulated to report huge capacities but in reality they have very little capacity and will corrupt your data when you go over the real capacity which may be as low as 2GB. Most of these memory cards come out of China, Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam but many are bought by bulk foreign buyers to be resold. The fraud is rampant on Ebay and Amazon Marketplace. Many Ebayers who found they have been defrauded with a fake turn around and sell their fake again on Ebay.
What to look for in bogus flash memory?
1. The price is far below the market price of £1.5 - £2.00 per GB of flash memory
2. The auction is from Asia; China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea, Vietnam or Japan. Many times buyers in Europe or North America buy loads of this junk to resell under their own Ebay IDs. Just because the seller is in the USA, UK or another industrialized country, doesn't mean it can't be a bargain USB stick. Many of these sellers create new Ebay accounts since they know the sticks are suspect and they do not wish to wreck their established Ebay reputation with this junk.
3. The seller is new and hardly has any feedback or the seller has feedback from selling "jewellery", or "T-shirts". Don't buy any memory product for a seller with zero feedback and no long term history selling such products on Ebay!
4. The "positive" feedback for flash memory sales many times comes from buyers with low or no ratings. The feedback is most of the time left all on the same day. This is a sign the seller has created bogus Ebay IDs and bit on his own item to give himself positive feedback. Most times these fake buyers would not have had time to receive the item in the mail in relation to how long the item has been listed on Ebay.
5. If you click on the feedback of the positive buyers of the flash memory you find most of the feedback from sellers who are no longer registered with Ebay or whose accounts have been suspended.
6. The positive history of these sellers has been made selling "jewellery" and then they suddenly switch to selling unlimited quantities of bogus USB sticks, for which they have no history.
7. The sellers from China with feedback ratings under 10 are the the fly-by-night sellers who unload as much of this junk as fast as they can before they get shut down. These sellers wander from new Ebay ID to new Ebay ID as they get shut down.
8. Sellers from China with a high number of feedbacks probably do not know they are dealing with counterfeits and will most likely stop selling the fake flash once they are aware of the issue.
9. If you look at the Ebay listings you will find people who have been burned with counterfeit USBs and are honestly trying to sell their junk as well as warn others of the problem with fake flash memory on Ebay.10. Data recovery companies cannot recover data from fake memory sticks whose data has been corrupted.
